Canon’s latest optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology provides up to 4-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. Photographers normally shooting handheld at 1/250 sec can switch on IS to obtain a similarly steady and blur-free result with a shutter speed of just 1/15 second. The inclusion of automatic panning detection makes it easier for photographers to track wildlife and other moving subjects. To ensure consistently accurate results at all zoom positions, the IS system within each lens has been optimised for that lens’ specific focal length range. Since the IS system is based within the lens, the results are visible through the viewfinder when framing the image.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Lots of lens for the money
What more do you want in a basic zoom lens? 3x zoom, compact, image stabilization to help compensate for it not being a particularly fast (wide aperture) lens. Appears to be pretty sturdy for a budget lens and I’ve had good luck with all the other Canon AF lenses I own.

5 Stars Great universal lens
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens I purchased this lens based on a recommendation. From the start it opened up a much greater range for my photographic experience, a terrific universal lens. The lens is light weight, easy to operate and takes incredibly sharp pictures. If you can afford only one mid-range macro to 55mm lens this is an excellent choice. Macro to mid range this lens excels, money well spent.

4 Stars Great lens for the $$$
PROS:

1) Inexpensive

2) Great portrait lens esp @ 35-55mm

3) Sharp, Clear images with great color depth

4) The “Image Stabilizer” works wonders in low light conditions

CONS:

1) plastic rather than metal construction (price)

2) slight vignetting in corners at 17mm

3) auto-focus is a little on the slow side

4) In my experience there is a slight performance degradation in the 17-24mm range, but not really noticeable in panaramic shots.

Having said all that, this lens performs like a $[...] lens the mid-upper focal length range.. it’s just a bit slower and not constructed quite so solidy. In fact, in portraits you may want to use a diffusion (soft-focus) filter, otherwise you will see every detail down to split ends in the hair. It’s that sharp.

I would definitely buy this again. This is as close to commercial quality shots you will get for under $[...].

4 Stars Why did I wait so long?
This lens is a replacement for a Sigma 18-50mm that I bought with my Canon XT several years ago. For the money this is a great lens, the image stabliser will work nicely when photgraphy my hyper kinetic nephews. To answer my own question, I had a serviceable lens in this focal range, and am too thrifty to replace something that works well enough.

5 Stars works great
I bought this lens to go with our Canon Digital Rebel XT. It works great.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great Product !
Great lens. Little to none zoom creep. Sharp pictures and good focus the majority of the time. Always on my Nikon.

4 Stars Excellent Image Quality, Low Cost, Great Build!
This is evidently Sigma’s third release of this lens, and it now includes HSM (HyperSonic Motor) so that it will work on cameras like the Nikon D40 and D60 and others with no built-in body autofocus (AF) motor. The AF motor is built into the lens, instead. It is very fast and quiet during autofocus, and does not hunt. The focus snaps into place quickly.

The easy way to make sure you are getting the HSM version is to check the sales ad for the filter size. The older lenses had a 67mm filter, while the new lens has a 72mm filter and lens cap. Looking at the lens, it seems a little shorter in length, yet slightly bigger around compared to the older lenses, due to the larger glass.

In shooting with this lens, I find the image quality to be simply superb at f/5.6 and f/8. At f/8 it is every bit as good as some of my Nikkor prime lenses. I don’t make that statement lightly! I am a strong user of single focal length prime lenses. The reason I bought this lens is because I own the Sigma 10-20mm super-wide, and found its image quality to be excellent at f/8, also. I am a tripod-based landscape shooter, so I am mostly concerned with maximum sharpness, low chromatic aberration, and nice contrast. The newest Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC HSM lens delivers on all those fronts. It is a lightweight carry lens for everyday “normal” use.

Opening the lens up to f/2.8 lowers sharpness, especially in the extreme corners. The nice thing, though, is that my Sigma is about as sharp wide-open, as my Nikkor 24-120mm VR lens is at f/5.6. It is quite usable and impressive at f/2.8 and even has very low vignetting, which is an unexpected bonus. Stopping down to f/4 brings this lens into a high-sharpness range that gets progressively better to about f/11. After that significant sharpness is lost due to diffraction (light being diverted by the edges of the aperture blades). At F/22, this lens seems less sharp than when wide-open. I consider the maximum-quality usability range of this lens to be between f/4 and f/11. The larger and smaller apertures are there when you need them, but with some loss of sharpness.

The short focal length range (18 to 50mm) is necessary to keep image quality under strict control. Most “professional” lenses will not have a large focal length range, since it is very difficult to correct for lens issues over a broad range of lengths in one lens.

The Macro feature on this lens is quite usable. I was carrying a 60mm Micro Nikkor in my daily carry bag, but no longer do so. While not true macro, it is very close, and allows me to get up to within a couple of inches of my subject at 50mm. Quite impressive!

Pros:

Light-weight and small size

Solid EX build

Very high sharpness between f/4 and f/11

f/2.8 when you need it!

High contrast

Fast and Quiet AF – HSM Style

Macro that works pretty well

Low price

Cons:

Short focal length range

Loss of sharpness in edges at f/2.8

Diffraction unsharpness quite noticeable at f/22

Mild vignetting (light falloff on edges) wide open.

I’ve been using this lens for several weeks now, and would buy it again! No lens is perfect, and I don’t expect this one to be. However, it easily meets my needs for a very sharp lens that will replace my use of several prime lenses. It adds little weight to my digital Nikons, so I can take it with me everywhere. It has become the daily “carry” lens on my Nikon D300. The images I have created with this lens, so far, have made me very happy. I enthusiastically recommend it!

5 Stars sigma18x50 macro
Received this lens the other day was looking for a all purpose lens and a macro f/2.8. I’m very pleased with sigma again great color, great sharpness, great lens, great price.

5 Stars Great for low-light situations
I got this lens as a replacement for my kit lens on my D40 – what a difference it’s made. Take a look at some of my pictures taken with this combination. All these pictures were taken hand-held: http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=893232

I have not noticed any front/ rear focus issues that others have had. The only thing I dislike is the noisy hunting that it occasionally does when in auto-focus mode. All-in-all, it’s a great lens. Recommended.

5 Stars Good lens! Glad I bought it!
It is a really nice lens for those who can’t or don’t want to drop $1k+ on the comparable Nikon 2.8 lens. It has nice bokeh. My copy was tack sharp. Highly recommended!

5 Stars Everybody else has already said it….
I am very happy with this lens, for the price and the quality, its amazing!!!!

5 Stars Cheap and effective!
This lens was an AWESOME value! The price just can’t be beat and performance is great! Just know that the lens casing and stuff is made out of plastic. Some people prefer the more expensive version made out of metal parts. Also, when coupled with a filter and shooting scenes with bright light sources in the background (bulbs, spotlights, etc) there may be an internal reflection due to the filter and the depth of the lens casing. Kinda hard to explain, but yea… That said, the lens is a GREAT lens to start off with and is perfect for the budding photographer. And at this price, there’s probably no better value for this aperture!

2 Stars 50MM D is made in China. Do not confuse with the old 50MM built in Japan
This Chinese lens [...] is as cheap as its construction quality. I’m amazed that nikon would walk down to this path. I guess the competition is hurting Nikon. This is a consumer lens, If you are an amateur then I think it’s fine to have one in your bag. I don’t know if a professional would rely in something so “flimsy”.

Stopped down at f/1.8 pictures are so soft that, in my opinion, it defeats the purpose of carrying a fast lens. The one I got was little “stick” to mount, what surprised me. I returned it after running some tests.

Tests were run using a D200.

Pros:

- Fast.

- Sharpness will improve when stopped down at f/2.8 and +

- Good for portrait

- Bokeh is OK but I didn’t find it extraordinary like some people in here found.

- If your camera’s sensor is DX sized then the focus will be about 75mm, meaning you’ll have to move farther from the the subject. If you really looking for a prime go for the 28mm or a zoom.

Cons:

- stopped dow at f/1.8 it was really soft. I focused on the model’s right eye and the left eye was so soft that the photo was unusable

- Cheap construction. The rear cap is a joke. I can’t image a screw in rear cap adding more than a couple dollars to the cost and it would really protect the lens.

- It will not auto focus in some cameras (Check nikousa.com)

If money is not a problem, I would suggest the f/1.4 G. Otherwise try places like Amazon market or EBAY or Craig list for a 50mm f/1.8 made in Japan (this is non D) they are built like a tank and last forever and for about the same price [...]

5 Stars Great little lens
I bought this lens to use for portrait photography. I must say, it’s an awesome lens. The only thing it doesn’t have is VR, but you should be using a tripod (or hard steady surface) with it anyway so it doesn’t matter. Great lens and produces great pictures.

4 Stars If it were edible…
I must say that the price is right for this lens. Incredible lens. And I must say that the fact that it isn’t AF is no biggie. It is hard to get the right focus down in the dark, but I don’t mind. Creates incredible bokeh. I call it the “nifty fifty”. If it were edible I’d eat it. Yum

4 Stars D700 Training Video
JumpStart Video Training Guide for the Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera on DVD (2 Disc Set)

This training video got into just about everything the camera has to offer. It covers all of the settings and is a good starting point rather than using the manual which is huge. The only negative I found was that it moved very quickly. But that’s why they put the pause button in there.

3 Stars VERY FUNDAMENTAL INTRODUCTION
This is a very fundamental review on the D700. It’s basically an introduction to photography on some level. When it finally gets into explaining the camera’s features, it just names them and goes way too fast. I did not really find this product all that helpful.

Lucky for me, I had the foresight to also purchase the Volume 2 Advanced Tips DVD.

This is far more helpful in explaining what you can actually do with this camera.

4 Stars Sharp, lightweight…great lens
Love it. Not very sharp wide open, but at least you have that for emergencies. Once stopped down to f2 it’s sharp. I’ll be holding on to this one. I had the 50mm 1.8 as well and prefer this one. Much better build quality, although optically they are about the same.

5 Stars GREAT LENS!
This lens is great and I am extremely happy that I bought it. Now I keep it on my camera a D90 at all times…it is hard to go back a slower lens. It is easy, fast and extremely sharp so sharp that it is almost scary when you take portraits because it shows every little detail that you may want to hide! A must have!

5 Stars Fun lens
The one thing I can really say about this lens is that it’s tons of fun to use. I’ve taken a wide variety of shots with it, but the obvious thing is using the 1.4. I’ve used the 1.8 as well and it’s great, but if you really want it, I’d say the 1.4 is worth the extra investment. It feels solid while being really light, has a great variety of uses, and gives some of the nicest looking depth of field effects I’ve seen. The only problem is that sometimes it’s really hard to focus on the exact thing that you want, so you have to be extremely careful. There are times where I focused on someone and had a perfectly in focus ear with a blurry face. I’m also thinking of getting a wide aperture lens in a shorter focal length such as the 35mm 1.8 or even the 14mm 2.8 for some variety in my shots, since the 50mm tends to limit the types of portraits you take.

5 Stars Fantastic Lens – Great for low light events
This lens is very fast and very sharp! It is sharper than my older Sigma 50mm macro f/2.8. I used it at a concert in low light without flash, and the pictures are remarquable! I shot at f/1.4 ISO 800 1/160sec and I am only using a D50 and the results are perfect!

5 Stars Must Have Lens
Great little lens – I definitely consider it a must have. For me, the extra stop from the 1.8 is worth it.

4 Stars Really Make a Difference
I am just starting out with digital photography and these attachments really make a difference in close up photography. Recommend them highly

4 Stars Wonderful for the price!
While a far cry from a true macro lens, what can you expect for under $20. These filters tremendously boost the Nikon’s 18-55 lens’s macro capabilities.

The reason I only gave it 4 stars is beacuse the glass seems a bit splotchy. Perhaps a good cleaning would help. I’m also a bit disappointed in the “wallet” they came in. I was hoping for something a bit softer rather than nylon and nylon nets. But then again, what can you expect for the price?

5 Stars Fun!
These macro filters are great! They are really fun and the images from them look great on my Nikon D60.

5 Stars Amazing, very good product
WOW WOW WOW, for this price, it exceeds my expectation. BUY IT NOW, these lens are so great. I will post pictures if I could later this week

5 Stars great product
These lens are durable and work for its purpose. I have no complaints on this product as of yet!

Yum

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Does its job well
The RC-1 is a simple, effective device that controls the shutter on a compatible model of camera. (I use it with a Canon Rebel XSi.) It can be used simply to trigger a shot, or to trigger it after a two-second delay. When the camera is in Bulb mode (for long exposures), the RC-1 will keep the shutter open as long as its button is held down. This is all it does; you’ll need to go to the camera if you want to adjust the focus, the aperture, the exposure time, the ISO setting, or anything else.

I mostly use the RC-1 for long telephoto shots that would be ruined by the small vibrations that are caused by pressing the shutter release button on the camera. It does this job well.

The RC-1 also comes with a simple mounting bracket that fits onto your camera strap. When the RC-1 is on the bracket, it is held securely and won’t fall off, but it’s easy to remove by pressing the release button.

4 Stars Pretty good…
I bought this when I purchased the Canon Rebel xsi. It works well, just not from very long distance. And thus far in using it (if I’m taking a picture with me in it), I haven’t been able to take the shot inconspicuously. (In other words, I sort of have to have my arm up to aim it directly at the camera.) But it does allow you the freedom to avoid the timer and run thing. And you can take multiple shots with it, which is great. And it’s small and can clip right onto the camera’s strap, which I like. If I had to make this purchase again, I would probably go with this one again. (The tipping point for me was at the time I bought it; it came with the free shipping, which ended up making the price comparable to the other brands. And since I was buying a Canon camera, I just took the path of least resistance went with the Canon product.)

4 Stars RC1 good deal
I like this little gadget. Very economical. It is held securely on the strap and I like the instant/delay shoot option. For backyard bird feeder photos it is simple to use. The only drawback is the distance from camera (must be within 16 feet) and it can’t be used in bright light. Those are minor obsticles. Performed well in the snowy mountains at 14 degrees.

1 Star Four monts and now its not working
I bougth this product months ago and it works fine, but now dont work I change the batteries but nothing its dead

5 Stars Great for astrophotography
I wanted a cheap remote to use to try out astrophotography. I was concerned that this remote might require you to hold down the shutter release button while you want the shutter open. Fortunately it didn’t. I can set it to shutter release mode and click it once to open the shutter and click it again to close the shutter. My camera (Rebel Xti) also has the option for a 2 second timer when using a remote so that you can get your hand out of the way. I’m pretty happy with this product. Now I want to get one with a sophisticated timer.
